A resilient house needs solid pillars
In the episode
“HR: House Builder or Home Maker?” of Vietnam HR Awards Podcast, aired on January 6, 2022, 03 HR leaders had an in-depth discussion about the difficulties and challenges that HR had to face during the pandemic. Various stories are unfolded, some had to work 16 hours per day, while scarified the time for their family, or many become exhausted due to lack of time for rest.
All three speakers agreed that to overcome the challenges of COVID-19, the HR team must memorize the “3-pillar-principle”.
The first pillar – according to Ms. Pham Thi Xuan Nguyet, Human Resources Director of DXC Vietnam – is the “physical pillar”.
No matter how busy the work become, the “runners” must always stay physically fit through spending time on health-related self-care to reach the finish line in this long-term “marathon”.
Secondly, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Regional HR Director, Mainland Southeast Asia, Avery Dennison RBIS, shared that HR need to nurture the “mental pillar”:
We must maintain our “nerves of steel” first and foremost, to be an exemplar and spread that consistency, help our employees move forward with confidence.
The last pillar, according to Mr. Nguyen Anh Hung, CHRO, PNJ Group, is “empathy pillar”. He affirmed that all efforts would be optimally effective if HR had empathy.
Understand yourself and understand others. The HR department needs to be prepared to face upcoming challenges, and acknowledge employees’ – leaders’ perspectives to develop a comprehensive solution.
The business “home sweet home” comes from consensus
All three speakers agreed that the HR department needed the business to assist them in the business-HR-employee relationship. Ms. Xuan Nguyet said: “When a problem occurs, instead of blaming each other, leaders and employees will gather and find a solution together. That is unit”. Moreover, Mr. Tuan shared his concept of companionship: the sympathy from leaders and the staff’s willingness to support the HR department.
To ensure the unity and trust between leaders, employees and HR, Mr. Hung introduced his principles, including:
- Understand the business environment, the current state of the organization, business activities, and each individual’s role in the sustainable development of the company.
- Optimize operation to adapt to the ever-changing market.
- Move faster to keep up with the current trend.
- Evolve to develop capabilities, advance outside-the-box and transform timely.
- Create cohesion to connect each individual in the enterprise into a homogeneous, united and synergistic block.
